As a parenting educator, I refuse to pretend that parenting is all about “how to potty train your child in three magical days.”
Like — yes, getting pee in the right place matters. But so does building a life you’re proud of over the two decades your children live under your roof.
I also don't buy the idea that if you were "doing it all correctly" your kids would be so much easier.
Parenting is way more complicated for some of us than an easy-peasy sweet sounding solution, and sometimes no matter how hard we are willing to work, we are still left dealing with circumstances that feel beyond our control.
It seemed so simple for other people – but for me, parenting felt very, VERY complex. Like everyone else was dealing with the 5-crayon pack but I somehow got the 64-crayon pack. Way more fun to color with but also way more work to clean up each day.
I started publicly documenting my story. Sharing the invisible emotional landscape beneath the basics of getting the kids off to school, with their teeth brushed, their potties trained, and generally just not being maniacs. Surprisingly, hundreds of thousands of parents started listening in, and many even wrote me letters saying: me too.
Turns out I wasn’t all alone.
Lots of you find parenting as rich and complex and beautiful and hard as I do.
You are the parents I show up for every day, so you too can know:
You aren’t alone either.
These are all incredibly lovely, loving homes with parents and kids who came to me because they were struggling in one way or another.
At one point I asked a number of them for pics, so others could see what it looked and felt like to turn struggles into JOY.
I was inundated with hundreds of photos. Here are just a few of them.
